Diabetes Connection

The brief

Here’s a problem worth solving: how do you reduce or eliminate diabetes in the single largest diabetes-inflicted city in America.

What my design research team discovered discovered two surprising facts: 1) fantastic programs for helping those with diabetes already existed in Memphis, but very few in the community were aware of them, and 2) the curriculae, while very good, felt unapproachable.

Though the community was app-averse and often used old, slow Android devices, there was one place that they all felt comfortable: Facebook. We helped re-vamping Facebook groups to serve the community, launched a digital ad campaign to help people connect, and modify existing programs to make them more approachable.

Journey mapping

Early journey-mapping helped us to understand the landscape and the broad feelings that those with diabetes struggled with.

Once our research was in, my team recommended straightforward modifications to the existing programming to make it more approachable. The most significant recommendations had to do with class length and supplemental activities like cooking classes.
